Meet Dr. McAtamney: My Approach to Caring for the Floral Park Community
Chiropractic Is More Than What I Do—It’s Why I’m Here
If you’ve lived in Floral Park for any length of time, you know that this community has something special about it. Families know one another. Children grow up here. Neighbors become friends. And many of us want the people around us to live healthier, happier, more meaningful lives.
That is one of the reasons I am so grateful to practice chiropractic here in Floral Park.
I’m Dr. John McAtamney, and I have been providing chiropractic care since 1993. My journey into chiropractic actually began when I was just 14 years old. I became seriously ill and spent about two weeks receiving care without getting the answers or results I was looking for. Eventually, my parents brought me to a chiropractor whose care made a profound difference in my life.
That experience changed the direction of my life.
It introduced me to chiropractic—not simply as a way to address a problem, but as a different way of thinking about health.
Why I Chose to Practice in Floral Park
Over the years, I have had the privilege of caring for thousands of people. In 2014, I established my practice in its current location in Floral Park.
Being part of this community is important to me.
My goal has always been to create an office where people feel listened to, respected, educated and cared for. When someone walks through our doors, I don’t want them to feel like a number or simply another appointment on the schedule.
I want to hear their story.
What brought you here?
How is it affecting your life?
What are you no longer able to do because of the way you feel?
What are you hoping to accomplish?
Those questions matter because every person is different. My approach is to understand the individual first and then determine how chiropractic care may be able to help.
My Approach Starts With the Nervous System
One of the foundational ideas behind my approach to chiropractic is that the nervous system plays a central role in how the body functions.
The brain and nervous system communicate with every part of the body. When that communication is affected, I believe it is important to evaluate the spine and nervous system and determine whether there is interference that may be affecting how the body functions.
This is where my chiropractic philosophy comes into play.
I don’t believe chiropractic should simply be about chasing symptoms. My goal is to identify what is happening, explain my findings clearly, and develop an individualized approach to care.
Our office mission is centered around Enhancing Life While Empowering Lives—helping people understand their health and giving them the information they need to make informed decisions about their care.
Every Person Needs a Different Approach
There isn’t one chiropractic technique that is right for every person.
Over the years, I have continued to study and train in different approaches so that I can customize care. Depending on the individual, care may incorporate techniques such as Diversified, Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT), cranial adjusting, upper cervical care, Logan Basic, Applied Kinesiology and other approaches.
We also utilize technologies and tools such as the INSiGHT™ scanning system, ArthroStim®, VibraCussor®, cold laser and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy when appropriate.
The important thing isn’t simply having a lot of techniques.
The important thing is knowing when and how to use them for the individual sitting in front of you.
Caring for the Whole Family
One of the things I enjoy most about chiropractic is being able to care for entire families.
I have pursued additional education in pediatric and perinatal chiropractic because pregnancy, birth and childhood are important stages of life that deserve specialized consideration.
I received advanced pediatric certification through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and completed additional perinatal training. I am also certified in the Webster Technique and continue to pursue additional education in cranial care.
Caring for Moms
Pregnancy can bring tremendous physical changes. A woman’s posture, balance, spine and pelvis are adapting as her baby grows.
My goal when caring for pregnant women is to provide specific, individualized chiropractic care while helping mothers understand the changes taking place in their bodies.
I also encourage moms-to-be to build a strong support team, including the appropriate birth professionals, and to prepare themselves physically and emotionally for the arrival of their baby.
Caring for Children
Children are not simply small adults.
Their bodies and nervous systems are developing rapidly, and their experiences—from pregnancy and birth through growth, play and everyday childhood activities—can place different demands on them.
My pediatric approach emphasizes gentle, age-appropriate care. I have continued my education in pediatric chiropractic so that I can better serve infants, children and families in our community.
For me, one of the greatest rewards is watching a child grow and develop while getting to know the entire family along the way.
I Am a Lifelong Student
I often describe myself as a “pathological learner.”
There is always something more to learn.
Chiropractic continues to evolve, and I believe doctors should never stop studying, questioning, attending seminars and looking for ways to improve their ability to serve their patients.
That commitment to learning has led me to pursue additional training in pediatrics, perinatal care, cranial work and other chiropractic approaches. I have also been involved in professional organizations and chiropractic education throughout my career.
My education isn’t about collecting certifications.
It’s about becoming a better chiropractor for the people who trust me with their care.
What I Want People to Experience in My Office
I want people to feel that they have found a place where they can ask questions.
A place where someone will actually listen.
A place where they can learn more about their body and nervous system.
And a place where the goal isn’t simply to get them through today’s problem, but to help them understand the bigger picture of health.
That is why education has always been an important part of my practice.
My role isn’t to make decisions for you. My role is to examine, explain what I find, discuss your options and help you understand how chiropractic may fit into your health goals.
Ultimately, the choice is yours.
Chiropractic Has Become My Life’s Work
When I look back at being 14 years old and experiencing my own introduction to chiropractic, I couldn’t have imagined where that experience would eventually lead.
More than three decades later, I have the opportunity to do for other people what that chiropractor did for me—introduce them to another way of looking at health.
And I get to do it right here in Floral Park.
I am grateful for every family that has trusted me with their care, every child who has walked through our doors, every mom preparing for a new baby, and every person who has decided to learn more about chiropractic.
My purpose is simple: to Enhance Life While Empowering Lives.
That is what I strive to do every day at Inspired Chiropractic.
If you’ve never experienced chiropractic care—or if you’re simply curious about whether our approach may be appropriate for you and your family—I invite you to learn more, ask questions and start a conversation.
